The Importance of Yellow Jacket Nest Removal
Yellow jackets can be a serious problem for homeowners.
Like ants, yellow jackets are eusocial insects that work together as a colony.
As a colony, they defend their nest aggressively.
Sometimes, nests are hidden in unexpected places, like underneath deck stairs.
Stepping on or near a hidden nest can provoke them, causing harm to anyone unlucky enough to be nearby.
Depending on the size and location of the nest, you may be able to handle the yellow jacket nest removal yourself.
But sometimes, you’re better off calling a professional — it could save you a trip to the hospital!
Finding Nests Early
Yellow jackets usually prefer to build their nests in low-activity areas that are covered and protected.
Some species build their nests hanging from eaves or tree branches.
Others prefer wall voids or old rodent burrows underground.
If you suspect a nest is nearby, first look for an obvious nest hanging from a branch or roof soffit.
If you don’t see one, look for a small hole where yellow jackets are flying in and out regularly.

When Wasp Spray Might Work
It’s safest and most effective to knock down a nest when it’s small, consisting of just the queen and a few workers.
You may be able to treat the nest with wasp spray, or even a strong stream from a garden hose.
For safety’s sake, always treat at dusk or dawn, when the insects are less active.
Tips:
Keep a safe distance
Approach slowly
Wear protective clothing
Have an exit plan
When It’s Time to Call a Pro
If the nest has matured and grown too large, you might still see activity even after multiple spray attempts.
This is often because the spray isn’t reaching deep enough to kill the queen.
If the nest is in a wall void or underground, the same problem applies — the spray may not penetrate to the core of the nest.
In these cases, it’s best to call someone with the right safety gear and professional equipment to treat the area properly.
If you’re allergic, or simply uncomfortable dealing with yellow jackets, don’t take the risk!
Quick or sudden movements can provoke them, and you could end up in the hospital.
